The Science Behind Silk Sericin and Its Anti-Ageing Properties

Unsurprisingly, scientists and skin doctors continually explore new ingredients and technologies to combat skin ageing. What is surprising, however, is that the new fountain of youth was traditionally considered a waste in producing silk, a historically valued commodity.

Silk sericin is a natural polymer from the silkworm Bombyx mori. It is a protein that coats the two fibroin filaments within a cocoon. Traditionally, sericin is considered a waste product during silk production. It ends up as effluent during the degumming process. However, scientists soon discovered its potential as a vital biomaterial for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, saving countless lives.

Since then, various researchers have studied the properties of sericin. The studies have led them to identify the unique properties of silk sericin, making it the new holy grail of skin ageing.

Here are some of silk sericin’s benefits for the skin:

  • Sericin can lock in skin moisture. The unique protein has a high water-binding capacity (hydrophilic), which means it can attract and retain moisture from the environment. It also mimics the Natural Moisturising Factor (NMF) and forms a protective barrier that minimises Trans-Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL), effectively sealing moisture and keeping the skin hydrated. Its hydrating benefits stimulate cell proliferation, protect the skin against ultraviolet radiation, and accelerate wound healing.
  • It enhances the skin’s natural defence mechanism. Sericin strengthens the skin’s barrier function and protects against external aggressors such as UV radiation, pollution, and toxins. By fortifying the skin barrier, sericin helps to minimise damage from environmental stressors, which can lead to premature ageing.
  • An antioxidant. Free radicals in the environment are a significant contributor to oxidative stress, which accelerates skin ageing. Free radicals can damage the skin’s cells and accelerate the breakdown of collagen and elastin, leading to sagging and wrinkles. Sericin contains high levels of antioxidants that neutralise free radicals, reducing oxidative stress and making the skin look younger-looking.
  • Boosts collagen production. Studies show that sericin, when added into fibroblast cell culture promotes cell growth and collagen production. Collagen is a protein responsible for maintaining the skin’s firmness and elasticity. As we age, collagen production naturally declines, resulting in the formation of wrinkles and sagging skin. By promoting collagen synthesis, sericin helps to restore the skin’s structural integrity, improve its texture, and minimise the visible signs of ageing.
  • It has anti-inflammatory properties. Sericin helps inhibit the generation of pro-inflammatory cytokines, effectively reducing skin inflammation, redness, and irritation. It is particularly beneficial for sensitive skin prone to irritation.

In recent years, scientific research has further explored the potential applications of sericin in various fields, including wound healing and tissue regeneration. Studies have shown that sericin possesses Transforming Growth Factors (TGF) β1, β2, that accelerate wound closure, enhance tissue regeneration, and reduce scar formation. These findings suggest that sericin have broader implications beyond skincare, providing opportunities for further advancements in the medical and cosmetic fields.
